Grace to be born
From the Pro-Life Philippines Foundation, Inc.
BO Sanchez is a preacher, singer, publisher of the popular “Kerygma Magazine”, radio and TV host. All of those roles he can accomplish because he is a dreamer.
Years aback, he dreamed of taking care of elderly and disabled as part of his mission in Shepherd’s Voice. And he did set up the ANAWIM in Montalban, Rizal—a spacious mountain-side area with several dormitories, session halls and lovely chapel overlooking the Marikina Valley.
Last year, he called me up saying he wanted to be more involved in pro-life and help save babies. Maybe his experience of having a growing family of his own has motivated him to help mothers in whatever circumstance to give birth to their children. And so “Grace to be Born” Maternity Home and Nursery was set up in Pasig City last June. Of course, all his dreams are realized because others dream along with him (or should I say, he practically puts those dreams in other people’s hearts through his friendly persuasion!).

A Happy Launch in MOD Day at Grace To Be Born
AT 16, Mai—not her real name—was sure she was going to be somebody once she’s done with school. Always the achiever, she was at the Top 5 of her class and was a member of her school’s women’s volleyball varsity team, the debate team, and wrote for the school paper. She had her sights set on which college to go to and what course to take up. Everything seemed to be going according to plan until it happened. She got pregnant by her boyfriend two years her senior. She did not know what to do. She was not ready to take on such a huge responsibility. She was not ready to be somebody’s mommy. Now on her third week of pregnancy, Mai contemplated going through an abortion procedure.
Mai is among hundreds of women caught in such a crisis. They are confused. They don’t have resources to be able to get out of the trap. They have no one to turn to. MOD’s newest advocacy is to reach out to these women. We launched the program last July 31 in MOD Day at Grace To Be Born.
Grace To Be Born is a shelter for women in crisis. The name of the shelter expresses its philosophy: that to be born is a grace. Thus Grace To Be Born provides refuge to unwed pregnant mothers who do not want to resort to abortion. It also serves as an orphanage to abandoned babies.

Shelter welcomes unwed mothers, abandoned babies

MANILA, Philippines – Hospitals saddled with abandoned newly born babies in their nurseries can now call Grace to be Born Ministry in Pasig through Rey Ortega at 0917-816-4700 or Myrna Ortega at 0917-803-9139. The shelter on 53 Dr. Sixto Antonio Avenue in Kapasigan, Pasig, was blessed last May 8 by Father Roy Rosales, parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.
Unwed pregnant women
also now have a place to take refuge – with no questions asked, no deposit required for board and lodging. They are just asked not to abort their babies
This shelter was made possible by the couple Basti and Betty Roxas Chua, who own the building and were giving the place for use rent-free. The couple spent P2 million to renovate the place and build rooms. This setting up of the shelter is a dream come true for Rey Ortega and Bo Sanchez of the Light of Jesus Community. Betty and Basti Roxas Chua founded Rosary for Life Philippines that opposes abortion by praying all four Mysteries of the Holy Rosary for one hour a week.
How it came about
Mr. and Mrs. Roxas Chua came to know about the need for the shelter when Rey Ortega acted as proxy for Bo Sanchez as guest speaker during the third Wednesday Mass of the Rosary for Life last November. Rey cited statistics revealing that there are at least 300,000 abortions in the Philippines in a year. Then, he mentioned the need for a shelter for unwed mothers and their babies who will be taken care of by volunteer ob-gyne and pedia doctors.
The following day, Betty Chua called Rey to lunch and discussed with him the possibilities of putting up a shelter. Rey, by the way, also runs the Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children’s Home (an orphanage), so he has experience dealing with the problem of abandoned babies.
Last January, the Chuas met with Sanchez and Ortega, and they decided to put up the shelter.
Those who wish to help in this cause can donate in cash or in kind; diapers, milk, baby clothes, medicines and money to pay for water and electricity. For more info, please e-mail reylindo.ortega@gmail.com or myrna.ortega@gmail.com.

Grace To Be Born offers alternative vs. abortion
Philippine Star, Published on May 19, 2009 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines – According to a study made in 2006, 800 women die each year because of abortion complications, while a study in 2003 showed that induced abortions among Filipino women reach 319,000 a year. Compared to adult women who have abortions, adolescents who abort are two to four times more likely to commit suicide, develop psychological problems, and three times more likely to be admitted to mental hospitals.
Child abandonment, the practice of relinquishing interests and claims over one’s child with the intent of never again resuming or reasserting it, is often caused by a number of social and cultural factors as well as mental illness, and is another issue that should be immediately addressed.
Last January, a baby was abandoned on a Mandaluyong sidewalk, while another baby was abandoned near the Shrine of Divine Mercy. Some pregnant women enter hospitals, register fictitious names and false addresses, and then quickly escape a day or two after delivery, deliberately leaving their babies behind.
These and other shocking events have prompted Bo Sanchez, Rey Ortega, Ditas Espanol, and other members of the Light of Jesus community to help pro-life movements in their advocacy campaign against abortion by establishing the Grace To Be Born ministry, a group that convinces pregnant women in crisis not to abort their babies by providing them with alternatives.
The ministry manages a shelter at 53 Dr. Sixto Antonio Avenue, Kapasigan, Pasig City, which serves both as a halfway house for unwed mothers and as an orphanage for abandoned babies. It also shoulders the maternity expenses and takes care of the babies, as well as those abandoned in the streets and government hospitals.
To support this endeavor, the group appeals to kindhearted citizens, NGOs, church and civic groups to donate money, foodstuff, milk, diapers, and other baby and pregnant women’s needs, with official receipts issued for tax deductions.
By offering these alternatives to women in crisis, Grace To Be Born ultimately aims to help in the fight against abortion and to successfully put abandoned infants in nurturing homes that would enable them to grow up and live in a normal and loving family environment.
Grace To Be Born ministry is duly registered and approved by SEC, DSWD, BIR, and the Mayor’s Office. For details, questions or donations, call Rey Ortega at 0917-8164700 or 09228597035, or Myrna Ortega at 09178039139. E-mail reylindo.ortega@gmail.com and myrna.ortega@gmail.com.
